What to Wear: Cold to Hot Weather

Living in Colorado, I frequently find myself in situations where we’re going from extremely cold weather to hot weather - it’s a unique challenge when you’re trying to figure out what to wear to the airport! Here are the general guidelines I follow when I’m in that situation:

  • Start with a base layer that’s comfortable in hot weather. I usually do a crop top and leggings.

  • Pack some flip-flops in your carry-on. Heat mostly escapes through your head and your feet, so changing into open shoes when you arrive is a quick/easy way to let out some heat!

  • Layer with multi-purpose items. I like to be as efficient as possible when packing since I travel with a carry-on only 99% of the time, so I always like to pack items that serve more than one purpose. Some examples are:

    • A white button-down can also be worn as a swim coverup

    • Sneakers will keep your feet warm in the cold, and you can wear them for working out.

    • A light sweatshirt and/or denim jacket will help keep you warm while traveling, and also are nice to have for cooler evenings/inside buildings that are air-conditioned. Even though you’re traveling to a warmer climate, there are still some times you might want a sweater!

    • A pashmina scarf adds another layer of warmth, and can also double as a shawl/wrap for any nice dinners in the evening when it’s cooler.

  • Leave space in your carry-on to remove layers.
